Basement Waterproofing guide • Quincy, MA
Every April, the same basements flood: the ones nobody checked in February. Snowmelt is slow, steady, and relentless, and it finds every weakness the winter opened.
Do this checklist while the ground is still frozen. Once the melt starts, you are reacting instead of preparing.
Test it, clean the basin, check the discharge line for ice or blockage, and confirm the backup power works. The pump’s hardest weeks of the year are coming.
Make sure the discharge pipe exits well away from the foundation and downhill. A discharge that dumps water next to the house just recycles it back into the basin.
Winter heaving changes the slope around the foundation. Walk the perimeter and look for new low spots against the house where meltwater will pool.
Clogged gutters dump roof water at the foundation, and thaw season is when gutters are full of ice debris. Downspouts should carry water at least several feet from the house.
The unglamorous one: anything stored directly on the basement floor is one failed pump away from ruined. Pallets or shelving cost little and save a lot.
Pick the two easiest items: test the pump and walk the grading. If the pump is questionable or water pools against the foundation, call (857) 754-6182 before the thaw. February calls are maintenance; April calls are emergencies.
